Sound design is the final and most important element that helps the audience feel immersed in the film world, enhancing mood, atmosphere and tone.
the production mixer is responsible for recording sound on set.
not all sound is recorded on set, think about foley artists and all the little sounds we hear that help immerse us in the film.
can you guess how these sounds were made?
The screech of a velociraptors made by mixing a dolphin shriek and a walrus roar
The sound of a lightsaber is created by mixing a film projector's hum, TV interference and waving a mic infant of a speaker to create the swoosh.
Find out more about how sound designers make these iconic, cinematic sounds.

Why do we use sound design?
Sound design is a really important factor of a film and audio can really distract the audience. It can authenticity, dimension , enhance visual storytelling and selling the illusion of where the film places the audience.
Watch closely to see how the composer Hans Zimmer uses specific techniques to build tension in the movies he works on.

Foley artist Shaun Brennan, who’s worked on projects like “The Purge: Election Year” and “Red Dead Redemption,” showed us how some of the most crucial sounds in a fight scene are done. Sometimes, you need a piece of raw meat, or a stick of celery to get just the right sounds. Other times, a few real swords are all you need.

How Sound Effects For Horror Movies Are Made | Movies Insider Studio Unknown's Foley artist and sound designer Matt Davies makes sound effects for TVs and films in unusual types of ways. He uses raw chicken, crunchy tomatoes, and bell peppers to mimic the gross sounds you hear in horror films. Zombies are one of his specialties. He's mastered the guttural groaning noises heard in both classic and modern zombie films, including "V/H/S/2."

How Animal Sounds Are Made For Movies And TV | Movies Insider Foley artists use objects to create sounds based on a character’s movements and interactions in movies and TV shows. Sometimes, they will find themselves making sounds for animals. Marko Costanzo is a veteran Foley artist for c5 Sound, Inc. He has who worked on movies like “Ice Age,” “Life of Pi,” and “True Grit.” Costanzo explained how complicated it was to make the sounds of a dragonfly flapping its wings in “Men in Black,” and how he captured the footsteps of a dog at different ages in “Marley & Me.” Then, we showed him an animal clip he has never seen before and had him come up with the proper sounds on the spot.

The Magic of Making Sound In Hollywood, everything is magic and make-believe, even sounds. When you watch a film that immerses you completely in its world, you’re probably hearing the work of sound artists. If the work is done right, you won’t be able to tell that the “natural” sounds on screen are manufactured with studio props. That's the challenge for Warner Bros. Foley artists Alyson Moore, Chris Moriana and mixer Mary Jo Lang. Theirs is a practice in recreation, one creative element at a time.

They use many types of objects to get the sounds just right. Sometimes they make these sounds just as you'd expect — but other times, Foley artists need to experiment to get just the right sound. Sometimes they try out various fruits to get something gruesome-sounding, and other times they need a squeaky piece of furniture to create just the right animal sound.

Sound editing vs sound mixing
Sound Editing
Creation
Recording
Re-recording
sound editing is the process of:
sounds for the film.
Sound Mixing
The process of matching audio levels for the entire film.
Looking closely at:
dialogue
foley
musical score
sound effects:
sound effects are an artificially created or enhanced sound.
to find out more about working with multiple sound effects it can be used for many things such as:
ambient sound
Add realism
3. telling a story
4. amplify tension
5. influence audience
1. ambient sound
making sense of what is on screen. it's important the audience feel these settings and characters are real. this can be achieved using essential sounds that we hear match what we see on screen.
2. add realism
filmmakers can help us explore new worlds. notice all the familiar sound effects we hear in this scene and provides context. This helps the audience feel immersed in the film world.
3. telling a story
sounds can introduce new meanings and suggestions. the films elements should be so important in telling the story that there is sometimes scenes with no dialogue, purely nonverbal storytelling.
4.build tension
sounds effects are essential for horror films. even if not much is happening, using sound effects can help build the tension for the audience whilst they wait. a heartbeat, a creek, even a gust of wind can make viewers scream.
5.influence audiences emotions
sound effects can manipulate how the audience perceive the visuals on screen.
a rain shower could be calming and peaceful or it could be made out to be aggressive winds and downpour. watch in this scene how the looming tornado becomes more threatening.
a birdsong at the end of storm normally tells the audience it has passed and the sun will be back soon.
sound or no sound?
no natural sounds = viewer focuses on other noises
no soundtrack= the viewer focuses on the other sound layers
allowing them to achieve maximum impact if that’s what you are trying to achieve. no soundtrack instead a series of natural sounds. The viewer can hear the heightened natural sounds of the environment, making the viewer feel like they are there in nature.
the stripped-down crunch of footsteps on dirt
the hammering of tent pegs
the strike of a match
bird calls
This film is about BMXing but it begins with silence with a view of the subject at sunrise. This places the viewer in a wider context before moving to focus on a different subject. whilst we hear the clang of pots we see the character wake up and is jolted into action.
This creates contrast the between silence and the sudden noise signifies a transition. AS the soundtrack is added in the action is intensified.

Fight Club | The Beauty of Sound Design David Fincher's “Fight Club” has grown from an underrated gem, this video essays takes a look at the sound design that helped this film become a cult classic, to eventually being widely accepted as one of the best films of all time. I shine a light on the sound design of Ren Klyce and Richard Hymns, specifically in the film's fight scenes, and (hopefully) give a better idea of why it's so important in a film, and the role it played in cementing the films status as one of the greatest of all time.

SFX Secrets: Sound Editing vs Mixing How’d they construct the T-Rex’s roar in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park? Who was behind the alternation between bombs dropping and quiet ocean waves in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk? Well, both have to do with sound editing and sound mixing, two terms you likely hear every year during the Academy Awards. But do you know the difference between the two? Despite frequently being lumped together and sharing similar qualities, the two categories are actually quite different—yet both are equally crucial to the filmmaking process. Sound editing refers to the process of capturing sounds, both on set and after filming, and sound mixing refers to how the sounds are adjusted and layered during post-production. Putting the terms that simply, though, belies the artistry that goes into generating a film’s auditory feel (just ask iconic sound designer Walter Murch). So, next time you watch a great film, take a moment to appreciate the work that went into making it truly sound like a movie, and not an iPhone video. At the very least, you’ll be ready and able to explain these categories to your friends during next year’s Oscars.
Watch Now: The historically important short film Walter Murch helped restore and return to the public eye, Dickson Expiremental Sound Film.

How Quentin Tarantino Makes Violence So Much Fun — Sound Design for Film What is Sound Design for Film? ►► https://bit.ly/sound-film
Chapters:
00:00 Intro — Tarantino's Use of Sound & Violence
01:26 Building Tone with Sound Design
02:49 Sound Design in Kill Bill
04:05 Design with Intent
05:55 Sound Design Tips in Practice
Quentin Tarantino has been dealing in film violence for decades. Tarantino’s cinematic violence can be equally brutal and entertaining. But how is he able to shift between these two modes so easily without completely disrupting the tone of the film? The secret lies in his film sound design. When considering sound design for film, we quickly realize just how powerful it can be in shaping our experience.
In films like Django Unchained and Kill Bill, Quentin Tarantino shows us how by simply altering the sound design, scenes of violence can be perceived differently. In this video essay, we’re going to look at how Foley and sound effects are used to create either cathartic and fun violence or disturbing and gritty violence.
In Kill Bill, when The Bride battles Gogo, the general sound design is playful and borderline cartoonish. As Gogo smashes through a table, we hear sound fx of bowling pins being knocked down — this echo of Looney Tunes sound design softens the violence. In Django Unchained, when Broomhilda is being whipped, the cinematic sound design is dramatic and vicious. Two different scenes of violence guided in two directions by film sound design.
Filmmaking is often prioritized with the visuals but directors like Quentin Tarantino understand the power of sound design. We experience movies with our eyes and our ears. When you conceptualize your next project, remember the role of film sound design in your storytelling.
